oidentd is an RFC 1413 compliant Ident daemon with IP masquerading support. It is primarily used by IRC and mail servers to identify users connecting from shared hosts and public networks. The program was written almost twenty years ago by Ryan McCabe, but has not been actively maintained since 2006.

Today, I’m excited to announce that I’ll be taking over development of oidentd. By doing so I hope to improve oidentd’s stability across all supported platforms, add support for recently released kernels, and fix some minor issues I’ve encountered.

oidentd is free software licensed under the GPLv2 and currently runs on Linux, Darwin, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD and Solaris. If you have any feedback or would like to contribute to the project, please open a GitHub issue or email me at oidentd at janikrabe dot com.
